The study provided an assessment of the occurrence of medicinal plants in the region of Ohrid and the two and Prespa lakes. Expertise of local people involved in the collection and trade of medicinal plants was evaluated. Their potential for sustainable use was established and methods for sustainable collection were described. Potential threats for the plant species were assessed and proposals for monitoring of plant populations and indications for their cultivation were provided. Criteria for a licensing system were established and possibilities for an eco-label and international criteria and standards for ecological and sustainable use of medicinal plants were discussed. The study provided and overview of existing trade of medicinal plants in the region. The study was financed by EU LIFE and ECAT Tirana.
